Tutorial: Present journal notes

While Windows Journal is mainly a notetaking tool, it can also be used as a presentation tool. You can add an element of personality and interactivity by incorporating ink into your pages (or slides in this context) as you go through them. There are ways to make Windows Journal more suited to this task.

Preselect pens and highlighters

When you’re in the middle of a presentation, you’ll want to be able to switch pens without going through dialog boxes. Not only does that distract the audience from your presentation, it also takes time away time that could be better spent on the presentation. Windows Journal saves up to five different pen choices and another five for highlighters.

  1. Tap the arrow next to the Pen/Highlighter toolbar button and tap Pen/Highlighter Settings.
  2. Under Current pens/highlighters, tap one of the five options and then customize the attributes at the bottom.

Hide toolbars from view

Using Full Screen, you can remove distracting user interface elements from view. Windows Journal will then only show the menu bar, toolbars, scrollbar, and navigation tools. If you are presenting your notes on a projector, you may partly hide these elements by positioning your projector until they fall outside the area of the projection screen. Alternatively, you can remove these elements from the Full Screen view.

  1. On the View menu, tap Full Screen.
  2. On the View menu, tap Toolbars, and then then tap the toolbar that you want to hide.
  3. On the Tools menu, tap Options.
  4. Under View, uncheck Show scrollbar in reading view.
Optimize page size and use Reading View

You can improve the flow of your presentation by setting a page size that fits the entire Full Screen view and by using Reading View. Using this combination, only one page is shown at any time without the need for scrolling, making it feel more like a traditional computer presentation.

  1. While in Full Screen view, tap Page Setup on the File menu.
  2. Under Paper, select Auto.
  3. Under Orientation, select the appropriate option, which is mostly likely Landscape.
  4. On the View menu, tap Reading View.
Change pen/highlighter colors quickly (optional)

In the case where you need to use more than five different pens/highlighters in a single presentation session, instead of going through the Pens and Highlighters dialog box, you should use the Format toolbar while in Full Screen. This toolbar lets you select any of the available color options with a single tap.

  1. On the View menu, tap Toolbars, and then tap Format.

When configured properly, you should see what is shown below - a highly streamlined interface that is well suited for presentations. And best of all, the slides can be navigated back and forth with arrow keys or presenter devices.
