Creative Inspire T6160 review

With Logitech appearing to be shifting its focus to 2.1 computer speaker systems comes the latest incarnation of Creative’s 5.1 surround sound system for the computer – the Inspire T6160. It features five equally powered satellites rated at 6W RMS (meaning the center channel is not additionally amplified), and one 20W RMS subwoofer. Creative also rates a frequency response of 40Hz – 20kHz and 75db of signal-to-noise ratio. The subwoofer enclosure appears to be constructed from wood and the satellites are encased in plastic material.

The magnetically-shielded satellite speakers each contain a single 2-inch driver with a cone designed to separate mid-tones from the treble. The 5.25-inch subwoofer is of a downward-firing design. The front speaker cables are 1.7 meters long, and the rear speakers cables are 4 meters long. The front cables are long enough but the rear speaker cables require extension cables to be hanged on ceiling corners or on walls.

The speakers come with a volume controller which also acts as an on/off switch. Bass level is located on the back of the subwoofer. The speakers are connected to the computer through three 3.5mm audio connectors. The Now it’s time to put the speakers through its paces.

Sound quality test

Testing was done with the speakers arranged according to the ITU 775 standard (the standard 5.1 speaker arrangement) in a 75cm radius, which is about the typical distance for desktop computer use.

Movies: the T6160 performed exceptionally well in Clint Eastwood’s Letters from Iwo Jima which makes excellent use of surround sound effects to recreate the battlefield atmosphere (no wonder the movie earned the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing). Bass response was very good and detailed at approximately 70% volume level (very ear-deafening), with no noticeable distortion – creating very believable cannon blast sounds. Only when going over this volume level would the bass start to become muffled, but you would need to wear ear protection to listen to this. Particularly impressive are the satellites, with very sharp, rich and clear delineation between mid-tone and treble effects – you can clearly differentiate the multilayered sound effects in the crossfire scenes which was only enhanced by impressive surround effects from the hovering aircraft which were accurately recreated by the rear channel speakers.

When playing Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the T6160 was able to retain the clarity of the background soundtrack even during heavy action scenes, and Nazgûl screeches were very well defined by the satellite speakers – very impressive when you consider the fact that the satellite speakers do not feature a dedicated tweeter. To test channel separation performance, I used George Lucas’ Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace’s podracing scene. Even with the volume turned to a very loud 70%, there was very little channel crosstalk detected, and the T6160 delivered some impressive rear surround effects. The transition between the two rear speakers was very smooth, so was the transition from front speakers to the back. There was very little to fault here.

The only real-world problem observed when testing the T6160 is that since the center channel is equally powered as the rest (which is actually ideal), movies with a very large dynamic range will require volume calibration (a boost in volume) to the center channel on the T6160, or a reduction in dynamic range to compensate. Otherwise, dialog from the center channel would often be overwhelmed by sound effects from the left and right speakers. But this is a problem of the sound material, not the speakers.

Distortion: hissing noise from the satellites was detected at all volume levels, although they only become a problem when the volume is set near the maximum. Subwoofer humming noise was low but could be heard with the bass level knob turned up to its maximum. While the subwoofer would distort above 70% volume, it was very hard to make the satellites to clip. In fact, the satellites only clipped when playing synthetic sounds, such as the startup sound of Windows 7′s Minesweeper game, clipping occurred at the 70% volume and above, which should be repeat again is very ear-deafening. Overall, the distortion characteristics were very good in the normal volume levels.

On another note, the subwoofer had no trouble reproducing 20Hz with a volume of approximately 33%.

Summary

The T6160 exhibits very good sound quality. At a retail price of AUD $118.14/USD $79.99 (at the time of writing you can get them for AUD $79 at MSY), it is a great choice for those who are just starting out with surround sound for the computer. If you have RCA extension cables, it would make for an inexpensive small home theatre sound system too – the speakers have enough power and clarity for a sound space radius of up to 3 meters.

Hello there’ I was wondering whether my set had some kind of a problem. The thing is that while playing anything over quarter the voloume the woofer becomes mobile (bass is set to +1) It crashes around into things on a smooth floor. Do you think its normal?

    • 2 Corwin Tse April 13, 2010 at 2:39 pm

      Hi Wishal,

Thanks for your question. I suppose you meant the bass control is set to full right? I have tested the bass unit at maximum bass and at full volume and it never moved on smooth wood tiles. The bass unit’s stands are padded to prevent movement while on the ground so unless the floor is slippery or tilted it should not move by itself at any volume.

      Hope that helps.

    Hi there.

I just got these delivered today, and I have a problem with them. Only the two holes in the middle (the ones you stick the speaker wires in, don’t know what they are called in English) are working. The two bottom ones and the top one does not work. All the speakers are working fine, but only when connected to the two middle holes.

Any idea what might cause this? It’s really quite annoying.

    Thanks for your time.

  3. 4 Corwin Tse April 29, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    Hey Jodan,

It sounds like your computer is not configured to output surround sound, so only stereo could be heard from the middle set of audio ports (you can see the middle set is labeled Front which is for standard stereo).

First make sure you’ve plugged in the three audio connectors to your computer shown on the second image in the article. Next, make sure you’ve installed the audio drivers that came with your motherboard or sound card that you’re using. After that you just need to go to Control Panel (assuming you’re using Windows) and find the audio driver applet to enable the 5.1 channel sound.

Let me know your motherboard or sound card model so I can give more specific guidance.

    Hope that helps.

Hi Corwin Tse, I am having the same problem Jordan did with his speakers. Only the two middle speakers work even though all my speakers work perfectly if inserted into the middle holes. I’m wondering if you could please help me out. Thanks,
      Sarah

      • 6 Corwin Tse June 27, 2010 at 6:27 am

        Hey Sarah,

Have you installed the latest sound card driver from the manufacturer website? If the sound card is Realtek the drivers are here http://www.realtek.com/downloads/

If you have installed the drivers, open the driver program located in Control Panel and enable 5.1 output. You should be able to hear audio from all five speakers.

If this doesn’t help let us know. = ]

    Hi there!

I’ve already checked that the output settings are correct, 5.1.
Though, after I had configured and changed a few things, three of the speakers suddenly worked. (No idea which of the changes that actually worked) The two others also work, but they are at a much, much lower volume. Any idea what might cause this?

Obviously the speakers are all working, but it is now the volume problem which needs solving.

Will provide soundcard and motherboard models later when I get home. All I remember is that the motherboard is a gigabyte S-series, and the soundcard is a Realtek soundcard.

Thanks for quick reply and help :)

    Joran.

    • 8 Corwin Tse April 30, 2010 at 7:26 am

      Hi Jordan,

You’re welcome. Your speakers should be correctly configured by now and you can try out all kinds of 5.1 material. If you are watching a movie, it is actually normal for the rear speakers to sound quieter than the front speakers most of the time. That’s because most of the action is location at the front where the screen is. Only when something is going on in front of the screen (i.e. behind you) like a hovering helicopter would the rear speakers kick in at full volume. The source material (video or music file) decides how loud each speaker is for each second.

To test if the five speakers have the same maximum volume, go to (for Windows Vista/7) Control Panel > Sound > select Speakers and then Configure > Test. You can also listen to some 5.1 sample music at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/domorewith/sursoshowcase.aspx which has amplified rear channel volumes in the music file.

      Hope this helps.

    Hi corwin,

I require a small clarification suppose I purchase T6160 model can I use speakers to a DVD Player (5.1 channel) as it will have 6 distinct ports, but speaker contains only 3 3.5 mm jacks, I know I can use with my desktop no issues, but I wanted to know about DVD player, pls clarify.

    Thanks in advance

    • 10 Corwin Tse June 9, 2010 at 8:27 am

      Hey Chandra,

Good question. You need three sets of 2x RCA to 1x 3.5mm adapters which will net you with six RCA connectors for the DVD player. See those three colored 3.5mm jacks in the second image? The orange one shares the subwoofer and center channels, the green one is for the two front channels, and the black is for two rear channel signals. Each adapter splits these shared signals into individual channel signals.

After you split them using the three adapters, you will need to do some trial-and-error to get the right one in the DVD player’s outputs.

      Hope this helps. :)

  6. 11 Wishal June 18, 2010 at 9:36 am

Thank you for the prompt reply Corwin. The woofer was moving around with the bass level set to +2 at medium volume. We have a mirror smooth marble flooring. After reading your post i came up with a lowtech solution, placed the woofer on 2 inverted mousepads. Does the job of keeping the woofer from dancing!

I have a couple more questions (some might seems OC)

-SoundCard-Speaker characteristic: I’m not able to zero in on the cause of the issue. The issue is that when the speakers are run on 4 channel mode or 6 channel mode using the Intel 915′s on board sound card(Realtek), there is a Surround sound effect added.(its like having turned on the surround sound option on a deck) So, effectively the bass is lost and the sound is kinda hollow. When on the 2 channel mode the music is fine. Do you think this is a speaker characteristic or a sound card characteristic?

The usage of the comp is 60% for music and 40% for movies. So, the 5.1 is necessary. Should I get my self another 5.1 channel sound card or a separate 2.1 channel card & speakers for playing music?

-I need to extend the length of the front, middle and center speaker.

    • 12 Corwin Tse June 20, 2010 at 8:55 am

      Hi Wishal,

Good to hear it works. Maybe your subwoofer’s bass is stronger than normal.

The speakers themselves don’t add surround sound effects to stereo/mono signals. They play whatever signal is fed to them. Try turning off sound effects in the Realtek HD Audio Manager (it’s called Speaker Fill in Windows Vista/7) and media player settings (matrix, etc) and see if the effect is gone. Also check to see if the speaker lines on the computer are connected to the ones displayed in Realtek HD Audio Manager.

For your second question. Unless you’re unable to fix the added surround sound effects or that you want higher audio signal quality, there’s no need for two dedicated sound cards. Sound quality is very subjective so before you buy a sound card listen to the differences (compared to Realtek audio) at a computer store if possible and see if you think the differences are worth it to you.

If you want to extend the speaker cable length you’ll need something called RCA extension cable. Ask the store’s staff to confirm that they work with audio cables before purchasing.

      Hope that helps.

  7. 13 Wishal June 20, 2010 at 9:46 am

    Hi again’
Yes, I have already checked the Realtek HD Audio Manager. both sound effects-environment & equalizer are disabled. ‘been playing music with Itunes on Xp (effects turned off on that too) So it seems to be a sound card characteristic.

At the moment I have the front speakers volume turned down to 20% as they add the shill, hollowness and surround.

It isn’t possible to check out sound card before purchase at a store around here…Do u recommend any particular sound card brand for movies/music upgrade?

    Thanks for the help sir!

    • 14 Corwin Tse June 22, 2010 at 3:51 am

      Hey Wishal,

It’s pretty hard to pinpoint audio issues over the Internet but you can isolate the issue with the following.

      1. Test the speakers on another computer (a friend’s laptop for example) with 5.1 output. If it’s still giving hollowness or surround effect then it’s the speakers, if not then it’s the computer.

      2. If it’s the computer, use the original computer and install a fresh copy of the operating system (Windows for example) with audio drivers on a portable hard drive and boot from it. This should isolate any software issue that would cause the surround effect. If it still gives the problem, then it’s the sound card, if not then it’s a software problem.

      3. If it’s a sound card problem, you can get an external USB sound card for laptops/desktops or an internal sound card for desktops. I haven’t tried any of these but Creative X-Fi and Asus Xonar ranges are some of the popular brands I can think of at the moment. Make sure the one you buy accepts the three 3.5mm connectors and is compatible with a free PCI/PCIe slot on your motherboard (unless you choose a USB sound card).

      Hope this helps.

    Heyy!

I like your review, but it could be good if you post the backside of the subwoofer… i´m interesting to see how it´s look like… XD

I already bought a Creative soundcard and now I´m pretty sure that i buy this 5.1 speakers… I hope i don´t find some problems during the installation, i already saw some issues with the speakers and sometimes with the woofer…

thanks for the review it was really interesting, just a question, i saw the link with microsoft soundtest, u know some others files or website where I can test my “new” 5.1 system? some dolby, dts, ac3…etc

  10. 19 Joel August 4, 2010 at 3:05 am

Hi I am trying to find a decent comparison between the logitech X-530 and this creative Inspire T6160. Can you layout a quick comparison for me?
    Thanks

    • 20 Corwin Tse August 6, 2010 at 3:36 am

      Hi Joel,

The main differences between the two models spec-wise are:

      Subwoofer RMS power: 25W for X-530, 20W for T6160
Center channel RMS power: 15.5W for X-530, 6W for T6160
      Left/right channel RMS power: 7.4W for X-530, 6W for T6160
      Signal-to-noise ratio: >96db for X-530, >75db for T6160
      *figures from manufacturers’ websites

Notice that T6160 has five identical satellite speakers whereas X-530 has a stronger center channel. Both have the same spec-sheet frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz. Of course, you should try out these speakers in person at a store if possible.

      Good luck shopping!

  11. 21 James September 14, 2010 at 2:22 pm

    Hi Corwin.

Good review on the T-6160 speakers. I actually have a set of the Logitech X-530 speakers that I’m using at the moment, overall they are quite good sound and subwoofer wise but unfortunately the speakers are not magnetically shielded so the problem I have with mine is that every so often there will be a loud pop/crackle noise coming from the speakers due to interference, I’ve put up with it for over a year now but I’m considering retiring the X-530 and buying the T-6160 to replace them with.

Also have you seen or heard the Altec Lansing AL-FX5051 set of speakers? I’m trying to decide on one of the 2. On the plus side the Altec has a remote, a two-barreled, 6.5” isobaric subwoofer and USB connectivity but I’ve also heard that the speakers have a constant hiss/buzzing noise when they are not in use and also people have been complaining about the quality of them as well. It’s making it more difficult to decide because both are the same price at the same store where I want to buy my new set of speakers from, lol.

    Thanks,
    James.

    • 22 Corwin Tse September 17, 2010 at 12:32 pm

      Hi James,

The T6160 has a small amount of hiss noise when idle which gets louder as you turn up the volume. At moderate volumes the noise can be heard if placed in a say, quiet room at night. I haven’t tried out the AL-FX5051 so I wouldn’t be in a position to say which one sounds better. Spec-wise the FX5051 definitly beats out the T6160 of course.

If you plan to use the speakers with laptops mostly then go with the FX5051, otherwise both are great systems from the reviews I have read. (for example this review: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/new-generation-pc-5-1-speaker-systems,1526.html) I recommend you ask the store if they could let you test the two speakers, it will really make the decision-making process much easier.

Hope that helps a little and let us know how it goes. = ]

  12. 23 vinit October 5, 2010 at 6:45 am

    Hi there,
i am gonna buy creative T6160 model speaker, but i1st i need to know abt wheter can i connect those speakers to laptop? or does it requires sound card only?
    thanx in advance for help!

    • 24 Corwin Tse October 11, 2010 at 1:19 pm

      Hi Vinit,

If your laptop has three 3.5mm audio ports then it can probably output 5.1 and these speakers could work with it. If it only has one audio port, you can use an external USB sound card with three 3.5mm ports for the laptop to work with this set of speakers.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

  13. 25 Zack October 26, 2010 at 11:35 pm

    Hey Corwin,

Just like Jodan’s problem, configured with realtek but still the 3 satellites are not producing any sound, it all working when i tested and i just bought it..

    tnx hope u can help..

    • 26 Corwin Tse October 28, 2010 at 10:10 am

      Hi Jack,

Were you playing 5.1 material? By default the surround speakers only sound when you play surround sound material and not stereo. Also check if the volume for the surround speakers is not muted.

  14. 27 Mohit November 10, 2010 at 12:36 am

I have recently purchased the creative T6160 inspire. One of the speakers does the not work. Please note I have the sigmaTel Audio sound card. Please advise on what can be done. Thank you!

    Mohit

    • 28 Corwin Tse November 13, 2010 at 1:10 pm

      Hi Mohit,

Which speaker does not have sound and how many ports does the soundcard have? The T6160 needs three ports (usually they are line-in, front-out, and mic-in) from the computer for 5.1 to work. Try the steps I gave for Wishal to configure the ports for 5.1 output in Windows. You can also try setting up the speakers up on another computer and see how it goes. If you’ve tried all that and the problem persists, try to arrange for a replacement of repair.

      Hopes this helps.

  17. 33 Derek March 23, 2011 at 9:45 am

    Hi there Corwin,

i am interested in getting this speaker set. However, i really need clarifications from you before i’ll decide to get them. Here is my situation.

i’m trying to get this speakers to work on my PS3. And it has only 1 optical input. I understand there is a item that converts 3.5mm audio jacks to optical. May i also ask if that compromises the quality?

So let me summarise, i would like to ask if it is possible for the 3 audio input of the T6160 to fit into a optical cable.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    • 34 Corwin Tse March 26, 2011 at 10:00 am

      Hi Derek,

Thanks for the question. Since the audio source comes from the TOSLINK cable with all 6 channels of sound contained in it in digital form, you won’t lose sound channels if you convert them to analog form correctly.

To use the T-6160′s 5.1 with PlayStation 3 you need a device which can input one TOSLINK cable and output it to three 3.5mm TRS cables or six RCA cables which you will need to convert them using three 2x RCA to 1x 3.5mm TRS cable adapters. If you can do that, you should be able to preserve the 5.1 sound from the PS3.

      Hope that helps.

      Hi Raghav,

The T6160 has a more powerful subwoofer than the SBS 370.

After reading user reviews for the models you’ve listed, I would say you should go for T6160 for it’s low hum noise.

      Hi there hewa,

What program are you using to play Dolby Digital and DTS content? Some programs have limited channel support unless you have their full versions. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, try playing the content in Windows Media Player and we can diagnose from there.

  29. 54 hewa May 21, 2011 at 8:00 pm

when i playing youtube musics there only 2 speakers and sub works. Other 3 speakers are not work. whats the resent for that. my os is windows XP.

YouTube doesn’t support surround sound as I understand it. All surround sound content that are uploaded to YouTube are converted to stereo. It’s therefore normal to only hear sound from the two front speakers and the subwoofer only.

I am not aware of a way in Windows XP to get the other three speakers to duplicate the sounds for the front speakers unfortunately. You would need “speaker fill” software for this functionality which is included in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It doesn’t have a sound card. Is there any connector or adapter that i can use??? Will i get the same sound effect??? PLEASE HELP :(

In Realtek HD Audio Manager, experiment with Enable Bass Management and Swap Center/Subwoofer Output.

If that doesn’t work, go to Sound control panel > Speakers > Levels > max the Subwoofer volume level

If that doesn’t work. try the speakers on another computer. You may need to replace the subwoofer if that still doesn’t work.
